Coach Greg Spahr first picked up a sword as a student at Indiana State University where he went on to fence on their college team. As a fencer, he has garnered accolades as both an individual and team competitor. He has received gold medals in multiple state games, has been a nationally ranked epee fencer, and has represented the United States in international tournaments.
Coach Spahr began his coaching career in 1978. Over the years, he has taught fencing at various colleges and universities, middle and high schools, and has continued coaching individuals and teams for recreational and competitive fencing. His extensive coaching career has seen him develop both group fencing classes and individual lessons to best meet his fencers’ needs. Under his direction, Cape Fear Fencing Association has been named a “Best Fencing Club” by National Fencing Club Rankings on more than one occasion, being one of fewer than 50 clubs over the years to be named for more than one weapon.
